: In a recent initiative underscoring its commitment to sustainable impact and community development, RS South Africa proudly partnered with The Washing Machine Project to bring a practical, energy-free solution to laundry challenges in underserved communities.
Over two days at RS South Africa’s Distribution Centre in Kyalami, 44 dedicated employees volunteered their time to assemble ten manually operated washing machines. These machines, which use no electricity and 50% less water than traditional handwashing, were distributed to three beneficiaries across Gauteng, delivering real-world relief to those with limited access to reliable laundry facilities.
A Practical, Purposeful Partnership
Yogan Naidoo, Strategic Operations and Projects Manager, shared how the company was honoured to support this initiative.
“The manually operated washing machines, which save water and time, were donated to organisations making a tangible impact in their communities by providing basic education, food, and shelter,” adds Naidoo add. “This initiative reinforced the purpose of why RS exists: to make amazing happen for a better world.”
Real-World Impact
The impact of the project is already being felt on the ground. By reducing the burden of manual laundry, the machines not only support hygiene and health but also restore time, dignity, and independence to their users.
“Wearing clean clothes can boost self-esteem and confidence, promote dignity, and foster social integration,” says Naidoo. “We are proud that this project is contributing to healthier, more empowered communities.”
From Beneficiary to Advocate: A Community Perspective
Sibusiso Mofokeng, a field monitor at ForAfrika and a beneficiary of the initiative, describes the change the washing machine has brought to his daily life: “The washing machine has positively impacted my laundry routine. It saves time, and the process is much easier and more efficient. Before receiving the machine, I struggled to do laundry, especially on rainy days or when I had a lot of paperwork. Now, I can get other things done while doing the laundry.”
For Mofokeng, the new freedom has had ripple effects. “It has given me more time for my kids and my work at the ECD centre. I now have peace of mind knowing I can do laundry whenever I need to, without compromising my responsibilities.”
Looking ahead, Mofokeng sees the potential for even greater community upliftment. “This machine has helped me fulfil my role as both a principal and practitioner. With more time and less stress, I have even found myself coming up with new, creative ideas for the kids at our centre. I truly believe this project can benefit many more people.”
Looking to the Future
Given the success of this first rollout, RS South Africa is hopeful about expanding the initiative. “Our ambition is to extend the initiative to more outlying rural communities in the future,” affirms Naidoo.
As RS South Africa continues to drive purpose-led initiatives, partnerships like these demonstrate the company’s belief in creating long-lasting change: one wash, and one life, at a time.
